Woman, 57, fatally struck outside her Brooklyn home by SUV driver

A 73-year-old woman was fatally struck just steps from her Brooklyn home by an SUV driver, police said Monday.
Shopping bags littered the roadway where victim Chana Layosh had been trying to get across the street at Avenue L and E. 12th St. in Midwood about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Layosh was hit by the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling east on Avenue L and making a right turn.
Medics rushed Layosh to Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said the 57-year-old Jeep driver remained at the scene. He faced no immediate charges.
An investigation is being conducted by the NYPD highway collision investigation squad.
Records show the license plate for the Jeep is linked to four school zone speeding violations, the last one on Jan. 30, 2023. It is not clear, however, if the man involved in the fatal collision was behind the wheel in those four past incidents..
Layosh was one of three pedestrians killed over the weekend in Brooklyn and the Bronx, even as traffic deaths declined across the city over the past 12 months.
Dwight Downer, 60, was fatally hit early Saturday when a BMW driver collided with a pickup truck and then careened into four parked cars near Eastchester Road and Givan Ave. in the Bronx near Downer’s Baychester home.
Another 60-year-old man was fatally struck by a driver in the Bronx about 8 p.m. on Saturday, police said. Uddin Shahi was crossing Bruckner Blvd. near Castle Hill Ave. in Castle Hill, about a half mile from his home, when a Jeep Compass driver struck him, cops said.
